1. GREETINGS

Greetings! We hope this newsletter finds you in good spirits. 大家好。

If the characters in the above greeting look like gibberish (大家好) on your monitor, it's probably because your computer is unable to view double-byte Chinese characters. Software for viewing Chinese (as well as Japanese and Korean) on non-Chinese operating systems is available for download from both Twinbridge Software Corporation and NJStar Software.

We are working to update the MTC Alumni Association to be more responsive to the needs of members. Given most of our members are physically separated by large distances, we are looking for ways to bring people together in an on-line community.

2. COMING CHANGES

In response to suggestions from fellow MTC alumni (thank you for your suggestion), we will be making some changes within the next few weeks to make it easier to exchange ideas with one another and ask for your support as we move ahead. Many of you have indicated an interest in helping out with the Association. It is our mission to effectively use the resources of the internet to bring our ideas and talents together to achieve goals for the association that may not have been possible 5 years ago.

3. MTC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER GROUP -- MTCAA@EGROUPS.COM

[You do not need to take any action for the first change to be effective.]
The first change is that effective June 2000, newsletters will be distributed from a group distribution list that will be setup on "EGROUPS". The list name is called MTCAA. This will be setup automatically for you (you will receive a message in your e-mail indicating that this has been setup). You will be able to visit the website to set and change various settings. Your e-mail address will remain hidden from other users. You will continue *only* to receive newsletters from this group. Checkout the www.egroups.com website and chat with other MTC Alumni Association members who may also be on the site at the same time.

4. MTC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DISCUSSION GROUP -- MTCALUMNI@EGROUPS.COM

The second change is that effective immediately, we have setup an "egroup" for *discussion* purposes relating to any aspect of the MTC Alumni Association. Members of this group (entitled mtcalumni) will work on planning the future growth of the MTC Alumni Association and on meeting the needs of the overall organization. All city contacts and organizers will be included on this list as well as anyone else who is interested in helping to shape the future of the alumni association (city contacts will receive an egroups message on this). In order to make the alumni association more inviting to those who do not read/write English, our goal is to make the discussion group a bilingual group (Traditional Chinese/English). If you would like to be a part of the discussion group, please go to http://www.egroups.com/subscribe/mtcalumni. If you have any problems with this, please send a message to mtcalumni-subscribe@egroups.com or visit www.egroups.com. As a last resort, contact James Cheng at mtcalumni-owner@egroups.com.

5. MTCAA WEBSITE

Continued thanks to Lynn F. Lee for his invaluable contribution in creating and updating the MTC Alumni Association website. Great work! If you haven't seen it already, please do so as the site has already received over 1500 hits.

One new and interesting area on the MTC website consists of links to fellow MTC Alumni webpages. Currently, Chris Chen, James Cheng, Adrian Cotter, Lynn F. Lee, Kiet Long and Eric Mah have great links to their web sites. Check them out. If you'd like to link the MTC Alumni website to your site or have comments or suggestion of further developing the website, drop Lynn a line at eastdragon42@xoommail.com or mtcalumni@bigfoot.com.

Check out the official MTC Alumni Association website at http://www.ntnu.edu.tw/mtc/mtcaa

6. TOKYO REUNION

The MTC Alumni Association is planning a reunion in Japan in the year 2000, headed by Hiro (Ricky) Sakata. Ricky needs help from 4 people to organize this event so if you're interested in helping out, please let him know at article@yahoo.co.jp. We will send out information on dates in a future newsletter as the event will be open to all MTC Alumni.

7. NORTH AMERICA REUNION

The MTCAA is also looking for 2 people with energy and organization and leadership skills to lead a Y2K reunion in North America (perhaps to coincide with the Tokyo Reunion party). We have one person who has already expressed interest in helping out. If you have some ideas, please send them to mtcalumni@egroups.com.

We look forward to hearing from you with how things are.

Thanks -- mtcalumni@bigfoot.com.

8. NEWS/QUESTIONS FROM FELLOW ALUMNI

Jing-Jin Choi (Apelles) from Korea of puregold3@hotmail.com writes us:

"I want to find a friend -- we were students of MTC in 1996~1997. He maybe began in 1995..." "His name is Ethan Edward Pike -- from California (maybe San Francisco, but I don't know where he is now). Anyway he is American. "Secondly, I want to know the whereabout of Amy Chen(officer of MTC). Is she still there or has she changed her working place?"

Note to Jing-Jin -- we have confirmed that Amy is still at the MTC. Please contact Jing-Jin if you have any information that may help.

We received an interesting note from Ross Little who is now a first-year business student at Duke in South Carolina, US:

"I wish I could eat crickets for dinner like I did in Taipei!"

Question: So how did it taste?

DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
The Dragon Boat Festival is almost upon us (June 6 this year), and in honor of this year being the Year of the Dragon, a special article on dragon boat racing in Taiwan has been written by 6-year dragon boat veteran Lynn Lee for the June 2000 edition of the Taipei Review (formerly the Free China Review). Former MTC dragon boaters, you don't want to miss this! ;-) Look for it in your local library or bookstore, or view it online at http://publish.gio.gov.tw/FCR/fcr.html in June!

TOKYO, Mini-Reunion, April 23, 2000
James Cheng (MTC '95) was in Japan for a short visit and met up with Hiro (Ricky) Sakata (MTC '94), Eva Towada (MTC '94) and Ying (MTC '94). James and Hiro searched high and low to contact James' former classmate Eva only to find out that her place of residence was under renovation and inhabited by construction workers. After some friendly discussion and pleading with the head construction worker, a phone number was produced and we were able to contact Eva to meet up for a fun dinner in very crowded Shibuya.

HONG KONG, Mini-Reunion, January 13-16, 2000
Lynn Lee and Kiet Long (MTC '94) were in Hong Kong for a short visit and met up with Chris Chen (MTC '94), Eugene Sullivan (MTC '94), and Teruali Hirayama (MTC '95). Although attempts were made to contact Bill Shaw (MTC '95), unfortunately, he was unable to join up for the mini-reunion this time around. After meeting up for an enjoyable breakfast at The Bayou, a little bit of shopping was to be had in Mongkok for some inexpensive computer software.

If you've met with other alumni recently, we'd like to mention it in a future newsletter (with photos for the website, if you'd like). Please share your stories, experiences, and questions with other alumni by dropping us a line at mtcalumni@bigfoot.com. Stories typed in Chinese will be given first priority.

9. NEW MTC ALUMNI MEMBERS

We'd like to give a warm welcome to the 17 people who have joined since Janaury 2000 or have updated their e-mail contact address. Welcome to the new MTC Alumni! If you've indicated interest in helping out (most of you have) and you have some time, please join our discussion egroup and help the organization grow to meet your needs. See section 1.2 for how to sign up in the discussion group.

Here is a list of members who have joined (or updated their profiles) since January 2000. To see a full list of MTC Alumni members, consult the Members page.

10. CITY CONTACTS

We'd like to extend a warm welcome to Hsun-Jen (Eric) Huang (ehjh@hotmail.com) as our contact in Sydney, Australia and Frank Lavin (franklavin@yahoo.com) as our Singapore contact. It's great to have you two aboard.

If you're interested in volunteering as a city or country contact (ideally 2 people per city) please let us know at mtcalumni@bigfoot.com.

Chris Chen will be stepping down as our contact for Hong Kong; on behalf of the association, we'd like to thank Chris for his help and time in being a contact point, his valuable ideas and the energy he has brought to the group.
